Staying in touch with our members at Art Mason' Peaceful Warriors' Martial Arts Institute has always been very important to us. With this in mind we are always looking for ways to make this easier for students to get updates and news. Well we have something very new and exciting to announce. Peaceful Warriors' on Twitter.

What is Twitter? Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users' updates known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 bytes in length. Updates are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends (delivery to everyone being the default). Users can send and receive updates via the Twitter website, SMS, RSS (receive only), or through applications such as Tweetie, Twitterrific, Twitterfon, TweetDeck and Feedalizr.

Student who create Twitter accounts and 'follow' PeaceWarriors wil receive live updates on school news and happenings in real time depending on how they setup their access. Imagine never missing an event, function or bit of news again! Plus, you can post questions to the school on your Twitter account. So how do you get started? First the Twitter website at http://twitter.com and register with them. Then search for PeacefWarriors or Master Art Mason in the find a person section. From their FOLLOW us! If you like using your web browser to access twitter then this is all that is needed! If you prefer to use another application, here are some samples.

If you are hooked with Bell Mobility, you can send these update to your cell phone.

Important News from the desk of Master Art Mason

Dear Parents & Students,

I will be making some important changes to the format of our Monthly Newsletter as well as all electronic / EMAIL correspondence with you.

The MASS email system I have been using is going to be dropped ASAP (If you are reading this message in your INBOX, this is the method I am referring). It is a system that we have had a lot of bugs with, especially the fact that so many people's SPAM filters toss these emails into the junk box. From this writing forward all emails will come directly from the Student Website, including the Monthly Newsletter. The newsletter will once again be email directly to you on the 1st of each month.

What does this mean? Your MUST create and account on our student website (http://students.thepeacefulwarriors.org). Accounts are FREE and only take 2 minutes to setup. Without an account you will miss the emails and newsletters in the future.

Those with account please login and check to make sure your account is still active. Some people accounts were deleted by maintenance due to lack of use. This feature is going to be disabled in the future.

This upgrade is important to keep everyone up to date on what is going on with our school and will also improve the efficiency of our email service.

Toy Drive

It is hard to believe, but the Holiday Season is fast approaching us, which means it is once again time for our Annual Christmas Toy Drive. For the last 8 years at Christmas we have been asking student to donate toys for the underprivileged children in our community. With the current economic conditions I believe this becomes more important than ever.

So once again this year in conjunction with the Windsor Firefighters and the Windsor Lions Clubs we are asking parents and students to donate toys to this great cause. Please bring to your Peaceful Warriors' School any NEW / UNWRAPPED toy by Wednesday December 10th. These will then be collected and distributed to the Windsor Fire Fighter for re-distribution for those children in need.

I would like to thank everyone in advance for their very generous support over the past years.

Urgent Tournament Update!!!!!!

Dear Parents & Students,

Our School Tournament is fast approaching. Over the years this has been one of the most popular and rewarding events we hold. Our students from all 3 locations come together with a select group of invited schools to try out what has been learned in class in a safe and fun atmosphere. Regardless of age and belt rank, we have a division for you! Last November we had approximately 120+ competitors, which made for a fantastic tournament!

Now I understand how busy people are these days, and often things like these tournament get put on the back burning until we get much closer to the event (it is on Saturday November 15th, only 3 weeks from today!), however for a tournament to be successful we must have numbers. Without a great student turnout there can be no event. There is nothing more discouraging than coming to compete and having no one in your division to compete with.

With this in mind I am respectfully asking that all tournament applications be returned PAID by Thursday October 30th. At this time I will make a decision as to whether the tournament will go on, or be canceled. Applications returned that are not paid will not be counted at this time. Commitment is a must. If cancellation does occur, those who have submitted applications with be refunded their entry fee.

I would also like to remind everyone that classes are canceled on Friday October 31st for Halloween and Saturday November 1st due to the IMMAF in London Ontario. It is not too late to register for this event. We have a large group of students attending again this year.

Kyusho Jitsu Certification

Dear Parents & Students,

I will be starting a new Novice Kyusho Certification Course on Saturday October 4th 2008 at 3:00pm. These classes are held monthly at the Windsor School.

If you are interested in enrolling in this course you must act quickly. There is a total of 12 spots available and these are expected to go very fast! Currently there is a lot of interest in Kyusho outside of our school and I will be involved with these groups starting in the New Year. This could limit availablity in the future.

Advance Kyusho classes start in January 2009 also for current graduates.

If you are interested act quickly as the next available opportunity will not be until Fall 2009 at the earliest.

School Tournament 2008

Dear Parents & Students:

I have some great news for you! On Saturday November 15th 2008 Art Mason’s Peaceful Warriors’ Martial Arts Institute will be holding its second Invitational Tournament. The event will be held at Talbot Trail School on Ducharme Road. The event will start at 10:00 am sharp! All students should be there by 9:30 for registration.

This incredible event is open to all students from age 4 to age 65 & from White Belt all the way through to Black Belt. We have a division for everyone regardless of rank, experience or age. Tournaments are a great opportunity to show off your skills in a safe and fun environment. As the school Founder and Head Teacher I strongly urge everyone to participate!

What happens at a tournament? There are two primary divisions, one for patterns and the second for sparring. (There is also an advanced weapons division) The divisions are judged by Black Belts from our school as well as some guests from other schools that we include in our circle of friends. There are metals awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.

How will you know what to do? We will be starting to prepare all our students over the next few weeks for this exciting event. Everyone will be ready! Why attend this tournament? Well, for one thing tournaments are FUN! Also, the experience gained from participation is like coming to 10 classes. You can ask anyone who came to this event last year.

So, I know what your next question is! How do you sign up! With this letter you will receive an application form. Simply return this form with your fee of $45 dollars as soon as possible and you will be ready to go! Parents and family are welcome to come and watch this event as well. There is no admission charge for spectators! This is a great event for the entire family!

Attention Peaceful Warrior Black Belts

The 2 A's are one of the most important elements in your martial arts eduction. We preach this to the White Belts, but not as much to the Black Belts as perhaps we should. A reminder of that they 3 A's are and what they mean is as follows:

1) Attitute - A Black Belt Attitude

2) Attendance - Attending classes 2 times per week. (If you have a Black Belt Class it is best if this is one of them)

3) Academics - You are keeping up with what you need to know to progress.

Any Black Belt who is truly following the 3 A's for a specified amount of time (to be disclosed shortly) will become eligible to schedule a 30 minute private lesson with Master Art Mason. In this 30 minutes he will teach, review or work on any element of your training that interests you. It will be you choice!

This will be done on an ongoing basis to inspire the Black Belt in our school to achieve their goals and reach martial arts greatness!

June Testing Rescheduled

Dear Parents & Students,

As some of you already know we had a power outage last night at the Windsor Main School which caused us to have to cancel the colour belt tested scheduled for 7:30pm. Power was finally restored by Enwin Utilities about 11:30pm. The storm we had hit the area about 5:00pm last night damaged the main transformer located at the rear of our building. All normal operations will resume tonight.

The June Colour Belt Testing has been rescheduled for Saturday July 5th at 2:00pm. We will be doing both adults and juniors at the same time since this testing is small.

Attention Parents! Is your child Safe?

Our world is becoming more dangerous by the minute. Children are being molested, abducted, murdered and hurt in our cities and on our streets. Is there anything that can be done to make our children safe, aside from taking the law into our own hands? Yes there is! Education is the answer. The more you and your children know and understand how predators work and think the better.

Surprisingly there are few groups in Canada and the United States that are really interested in helping children, until now. On Sunday June 22nd 2008 Art Mason's Peaceful Warriors' Martial Arts Institute launched their new information website called The Kid's Safe Canada Network.

This website is dedicated to providing FREE to the public information on how to teach your child to be "street smart" and avoid problems with predators, and even school yard bullies!

It doesn't matter were you live in this world, the information provided on this website will benefit you! Bookmark the site and visit often!

June 2008 Colour Belt Testing

Dear Parents & Students,

We will be making a change to the testing date and times this month. Colour Belt Testing was originally scheduled for Saturday June 28th, however because it is the Canada Day weekend we are going to reschedule this testing for Thursday June 26th starting at 7:30pm. This month is a small testing, so both juniors and adults will be tested at this time.

Our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

Our Black Belt Extravaganza weekend was an amazing time! 44 students tested and were promoted that weekend for various Black Belt ranks. The testing, Showcase and Seminar day were packed with excitment and were a great learning experience for everyone.

My thanks to Grand Master Steve Stewart and Master Chad Barry who were in attendance at the Showcase and also presented seminar sessions on Sunday for both our Adult and Junior Black Belt graders.

Summer time blues

Every summer parents will ask me the same question. “How do I keep my son or daughter motivated to train when school is out?”

During the summer season, we naturally see a slow down in attendance due to family vacations. This is the way it should be; families need time together, to increase the bond that is present and to have some FUN! But, what about the time when you and the children are at home? Keeping them motivated and training is a MUST!

Aside from the idea that you don’t want your child to fall behind missing 2 months of classes, there are many other reason to keep motivated and training.

“Inertia” – “The tendency of an object at rest to remain at rest, and of an object in motion to remain in motion”

The definition of inertia also applies to people! Several years ago I had a family in the school who came to me their first summer with us to tell me that their son would not be in classes from June till September. I asked about the family vacation as was soon told that would be 2 weeks in July, but they felt that their son worked so hard during the year that he deserved to do NOTHING from June till September. I was shocked. I persisted to discuss the benefits of summer training and the harm that can come with the attitude they had taken. Both parents were very hard working people, putting in 60 hours per week each on their chosen fields, what a mixed message to that boy.

What happened to the boy? He returned in September, several months behind his piers, and several pounds heavier than when he left. He is no longer with our school.

The benefits of martial arts training come with time and dedication. When a person trains consistently, tests regularly and stays motivated the benefits will grow exponentially.

What is needed? The student needs to train 2 times per week. That is for children 90 minutes out of 168 hours per week. If your child is BBC or Master Club, this time might be a little more.

If you are consistent with this, your child will make progress and be successful!

Keeping Focused.

The next issue I will discuss here is the importance of keeping your child focused when school is out. After raising 3 children of my own and dealing with the Summer Off issues with them, I quickly became one of those parents who believe that our educational system is making a mistake giving children 2 months off school. I know that teachers work very hard in September to get children back on track.

By keeping your child training during the summer months, you help keep them focused on learning. This routine and consistency will benefit them all their lives as they grow. In order to be happy people need to continually challenge themselves and learn. No one needs to “veg”. Keep moving forward towards your goals. Work with your instructor to overcome the inertial problems. Help your child to set a goal and keep it. The benefits you will see over time are truly amazing!

Tax Receipts

Dear Parents & Students,

Many of you have inquired about the new 2007 sports child tax credit and getting receipts from the school for your child's tuition. Yes, we will be issuing these receipts very shortly. Sadly, the government has not given us any information on the procedure of what the receipt needs to look like or say. Also due to the vast number of receipts required we want to do this right the first time.

As of this writing we are almost set to go. Your tax receipt will follow very soon!

March Break is coming FAST!

Dear Parents & Students,

March Break is coming soon! The year it is scheduled for the week of March 10th to March 14th. Each year parents struggle to find something for their children to do during the day while they are at work. This year try somthing different. Enrol your son or daughter in our March Break Day Camps. They run all week long, from Monday to Friday. it is a day filled with martial arts related activities, games, movies and much, much more!

The cost of the camp is $149 including GST for the week. The camps starts at 9:00am with drop off as early as 8:15am. The camps finished at 3:00pm. The student need to bring their uniforms, a change of clothes, lunch and a smack. Anyone who enrols and pays before March 1st will receive a 10% discount. Please note this program is only open to Peaceful Warriors's Students.

Enrollment has already begun and we are expecting the camp to fill up fast! Attached to this message is an application package that you may print and return to the school with payment as soon as possible.

Just a few reminders about the schedule for this coming weekend.

Chad Barry will be in Windsor this Friday night. The cost of this seminar is $50 payable to Chad Barry. The session starts at 7:00pm and run till about 9:00 or so. There is still time to register. Don't miss out! This session is open to all adult students ages 14 and above.

On Friday January 19th the class schedule will be.

Black Belt class and Adult BBC Classes are canceled.

All classes in Belle River will be canceled Friday January 19th for the Chad Barry Seminar.

The Black Belt makeup Pre-Test will be held on Saturday Janury 20th at 1:00pm. The adult class normally scheduled for 12:15 on Saturday is canceled. The adult sparring class at 11:30 will be held as usual.

Novice Kyusho class is at 3:00pm till 6:00pm

Do You Belong to a Youth Group

Dear Parents and Students,

Our demonstration team is always on the look out for new revenues and places to perform our highly practiced demonstrations. If you belong to any recreation centers or participate in any youth group, club or team (i.e. Cubs, Scouts, Girl Guides, Dance Studio, Sport’s Team etc.) and think they would enjoy something out of the ordinary? This could be it!

Our demonstration team has worked hard for many months to put together a performance to excite and entertain almost any crowd. Their demonstration is full of exciting routines, patterns, and breaking to name just a few, and we do it all for our community. All of our demonstrations are no cost to any centre or group.

If you would like to arrange a demonstration or to have us talk with the coordinators of a recreation centre or youth group, please forward our information to them and let them know what we do. Or you may forward their information to us and we’ll take care of the rest!

March Break Day Camps

During the week of March 10th to 14th 2008, we will be holding Martial Arts Day Camps, open to all junior members of our school. These camps will be a different and exciting
look at the martial arts.

Camp will start at 9:00am sharp and finish at 3:00pm. Drop off can be as early as 8:30am. Earlier drop off and pickup can be arranged if necessary. Students must bring their uniforms with them, and it is suggested they also have a change of cloths (street clothes).

Student should also bring a lunch, drink and snack as these are not provided by the school.

The cost of the camp is $149 including GST for the week. If you register before March 1st 2008 you will receive a 10% discount. There is also a 20% discount for addition family members (they must be students). All cheques are payable to The Peaceful Warriors’.

Visa and Master Card are also accepted.

What is being covered at our camps? Besides doing work on the curriculum items, which will definitely give your child a step up in class, we are also going to have training sessions with Escrima Sticks, Sparring and sparring drills, special kicking drills, EZ Self Defense for children, movies and much, much more!

Escrima sticks will be needed for the week and can be order through our office. Enroll NOW, as this camp to fill up fast! The maximum number that will be accepted into the program is 25. We will have enough instructors available for the different sessions to accommodate all the age groups.

Instructor Certification Course

Part of the tradition of martial arts is the passing on of knowledge from one generation of students to the next. In the past the student approached the instructor looking for training in whatever art the teacher practiced and then waited for the teach to accept him or her as a student. Today thousands of men, women and children decide they wish to learn an art or discipline and seek out the best teacher they can find or afford. Times and circumstances have changed, but the basic tradition still lives on.

If you are one of these people interested in 'learning' how to teach the art you yourself have spent so much time practicing, then we have a solution for you! The Peaceful Warriors' Instructor Certification Course.

The course is comprised of a special Instructor Certification Study Manual. Once the manual is complete the student with then write and exam. The student will also be placed on the training floor, under the guidance to a certified instructor to lean the ins and outs of teaching both children and adults. The student will also be give a teaching timeslot, to begin to compile the number of teach hours needed to certify. Kyushi Pre-College

Dear Masters, Instructors and Black Belts,

Have you every had a Black Belt quit and open a school down the street? What is the highest rank Black Belt in your school? Would you like to retain the Black Belts you promote? How is your retention of adult students? Would you like keep the adult student you enroll?

Is your system lacking in material to teach your Black Belts? What are you teaching them; few new patterns, a few self defense techniques? Are you hoping their ‘loyalty’ will keep them training with you?

Is it hard to keep advanced students like red and brown belts motivated?

Is there a solution? The good news is YES! The answer to the problem of retaining advanced and black belt student is the art of Kyusho Jitsu. What is Kyusho? Kyusho is a non-intrusive art, that once the instructor knows it, can be integrated into any system or art without compromising tradition or the art itself!

I have been involved training and teaching the martial arts for 25 years. I spent 16 years with my first instructor and attained the rank of 4th Dan Black Belt while with him. Why did I stay so long? I was running a branch school for him, having a great time teaching, but after 1st Dan, except for learning a few new patterns, there was nothing! I started my search for something new to learn, without having to start all over again learning a completely different art.

In 2000 I opened my own school and started looking in earnest for things to teach my high ranking students. My instructor retired and a few of the high ranks that were with him followed me to my new school. But, what would I teach them?

In 2002 I found the answer, the pressure point study of Kyusho Jitsu. It has changed everything! Now as a school owner and instructor much of my curriculum is setup for easy retention of new students. But compared to the ‘old days’ we are often teaching so much information in the first few years that there is nothing left for the advanced students. Lets face it, we need Black Belts in our system to continue our teaching, build a larger and stronger and more profitable school!

So what exactly are the reasons that students quit?

We all know the truth, the number one reason is boredom; and that is the only one we can fix! The study of Kyusho, when applied to your root are, whatever it may be (TKD, Kempo, Goju etc.) it will provide you with an endless stream of materials to teach, enjoy and discover yourself, then teach it to your students.

So what exactly are you going to learn? What does the study of Kyusho give you?

• The proper methods of attacking a pressure point (nerve) to get maximum results every time, without needing a lot of power.

• How to make joint locks and throws effective regardless of the size of the attacker.
• Disable an attacker with minimum effort
• Learn ‘Humane Pressure Point Tactics’ to deal with a low level assault without doing excessive damage. (Great to teach police!)

Kyusho Jitsu is the study of the Pressure Point system of the body. The teachings are then applied to our root art of Hapkido. The above Black Belts were tested by Grand Master Stewart in October 2007, and like in the old days of martial arts training had to wait patently for their results to be available.

Last Minute Updates

Dear Parents and Students,

On Friday December 21st in Windsor we will be holding on Juniors Christmas Party. The event will start at 6:00pm sharp and run till about 8:00pm There will be games, pizza, cake, a pinata and lots of FUN! In the past we have held different parties at different locations. This year we are planning on BIG party, which will give the children a chance to meet students from other locations. Our Windsor school is close to Devonshire Mall, so parents can drop the children off and get some shopping done! The cost of this event is only $15. You MUST register by Friday December 14th to attend! The list is filling up fast! Don't miss out!

Our annual Christmas Toy drive is coming to an end. There is still time to drop off a new unwrapped toy for underprivileged children in our area. The final date is Monday December 10th.

The last day to order equipment from our school before the end of the year is Friday December 14th. Anything ordered after this date will NOT be available before Christmas. The last shipment will arrive on Monday December 17th. We are working hard to get all back orders into the school on this shipment.

Junior Black Belts, a reminder that on Saturday December 8th at 2:30pm in Windsor there is a Staff Advanced Workshop. Don't miss it!

The last Tournament Team practice of 2007 is on Saturday December 8th at 1:30pm.

Heating Issues

Dear Parents and Students,

We are currently experiencing problems with our heating systems and we greatly appreciate your patience in the matter so far. We are hoping to have this issue resolved as soon as possible so we can warm our school up a bit. Until that time we are using industrial strength space heaters to try and keep our class room at some what of comfortable temperature.

Until we have our heating issues resolved we will be allowing our students to temporarily dress warmer. Students will now be allowed to wear white t-shirts under their uniforms (in accordance with student dress code for women and girls). As well students may also wear “Clean” running/gym shoes during class. Shoes must be a running/jogging/sports type shoe to ensure safety and proper ankle and foot support during class.

Shoe’s worn outside on a regular basis are still prohibited because they may bring in unwanted and potentially harmful debris from outside such as glass, pesticides and other unwanted items. Shoes normally worn for gym classes or used to training at your local gym are more than acceptable.

If you have any other questions about acceptable foot ware for this temporary situation, please talk to any of our instructors.

The holiday season is once again upon us; therefore it is again time for the annual Windsor Firefight’s / Lions Club Toy Drive. Every year at the end of November and the first few weeks of December our school joins with the Windsor Firefighters and the Windsor Lions Club in collecting toys for underprivileged children in the Windsor / Essex County Area.

If you are interested in participating again this year we ask that your bring any NEW, UNWRAPPED toy to any location of The Peaceful Warriors' Martial Arts Institute where your contribution will be delivered to the needy for the Christmas / Holiday Season.

Last year we collected about 450 toys between 3 schools and hope to do as well this year. Thank you all for your continued support in this outreach program.

Black Belt Testing Updates

I wanted to take a moment to give an information update on the Black Belt Testing on Saturday November 17th in Windsor. The testing will begin at 1:00pm, not 2:00pm as previous information stated. The entire process should be done by 3:00pm.

Application for those students doing their pre-test is now available. Those testing for Assistant Black Belt should have received their application in the mail a few weeks ago. If you are testing for Assistant Black Belt please get your testing application in ASAP so we can assure that belts and certificates are here in time.

Tournament on Saturday!!!!

Dear Parents & Students:

On Saturday November 3rd, 2007, our school will be holding our first Invitational Tournament. Over the years we have held inter-school tournament, but this year for the first time we will be inviting outside schools to participate.

There will be divisions for age 5 and up, including adults or all rank groups. We request participation from all students as tournaments are an important element in your education. If you for some reason cannot participate please advise your instructor ASAP. The cost of this event is $40 for 1 to 2 divisions, there are no costs associated with spectators as with most tournament. Cameras and video are welcome. The event will start at 10:00am sharp and students should bring lunches with them. We are planning on also having a concessions stand available to sell hotdogs, pop and other items.

Applications are now available and should be returned paid no later than November 2^nd . This tournament will be held at Talbot Trail Public School. Don’t miss this exciting event! It is a chance to test your skills in a safe and fun environment.

Just a reminder of some coming events. Coloured belt testing is on Saturday at 2:00pm. As of this writing may students who are eligible to test still have not handed in their applications. We need these ASAP to prepare for the test. Records for the students need to be accessed, as well as belts and certificates order for those changing belts. Please try to get your applications in one week before testing. Those testing this month please submit your application ASAP.

Great News!!! The time for our 1^st Invitational School Tournament is fast approaching. If you have not received an application for this fantastic event please see your instructor ASAP. This tournament is open to all Peaceful Warriors' students to participate in! We will have a division for all ages, belt ranks and levels of experience. This will be a fun learning experience for everyone!

The tournament will again be held on Saturday November 3^rd starting at 10:00am sharp at Talbot Trail Public School, located at 4000 Ducharme in Windsor. Maps are available online and also from our office.

Dear Parents & Students,

A reminder that our school will be closed on Saturday Oct 6th and Monday October 8th 2007 for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Normal operations will resume on Tuesday Oct 9th. Our instructors and staff wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.

Also, as you should now be aware we will be holding an Tournament on Saturday November 3rd starting at 10:00am SHARP. The tournament is scheduled to be held at Talbot Trail Public School. More information will be given on this shortly. By now you or your child should have received an application for this event. Over the last few years we have held several tournament at which our students have had a great time and wonderful learning experience.

Parent's will sometimes ask me if their child is ready for such an event. A tournament that is well run and organized is a very positive experience for a child or adult and we strongly encourage participation even at the white belt level. There are divisions for all ages, belts and experience levels. Good sportsmanship and self control are the cornerstones of our tournament experience. Your child will have a GREAT TIME.

Please hand your applications into the office as soon as possible to held our staff get this event organized and ready to go. Applications may be DOWNLOADED here.

The Peaceful Warriors' 1st Texas Hold'em Tournament

On Saturday September 22nd, the Student Social Committee held its 1st Texas Hold'em Tournament and Card Night! We had a good turnout with a mix of new and long time students. Tournament started right on time and the rules adhered to, enforced by our very own "Pit Boss", ME!! (Michelle)

While snacking on munchies provided by the Student Social Committee, the game excitement grew as the chip lead passed around the 8 players seated, faster than a well executed roundhouse kick. Game commentary provided by Frank, Bruno, and late comer Brent, kept players amused as the game crept into the 2 hours range. In the end, after a few chip draining rounds of the Good, the Bad, & the Ugly Poker, third place was won by Rookie to Texas Hold'em, Heather Durand. Second place was taken by Master Curt, and first place was awarded to "The Comeback King" Kevin Miller.

Heather Durand also won best hand played of the night with a Full House. The "Lucky Loser" prize was awarded to Natalie Jenking.

Gary Herriot, Louise St. Jacques, Keith Jenking, Ryan Taillieu, Shayla Campbell, and Frank "Cancun" Romero all won door prizes.

As players were eliminated from the main game, fierce mini-rounds of Euchre were enjoyed by many. A second round of Hold'em was played, the winner of that game was Master Curt.

A special Thanks goes out to Bruno Lapicio for bringing in very a delicious snack and some wine, to share with all those in attendance.

Thanks also goes out to those individuals who stayed behind to help clean up after the event.

As it was a successful event, the Student Social Committee will plan a 2nd Tournament for sometime in November. Watch next month for details.

Women defeats rapist with martial arts

Attempted kidnap differed from serial rapist attacks

Police say an attempted abduction of a woman in Hamilton last night does not precisely follow the pattern used by an alleged serial rapist they are hunting.

A Hamilton student used martial arts skills to fight off a man who tried to abduct her near the intersection of Caro St and Alexandra St in downtown Hamilton about midnight.

She had been walking with a female friend when the passenger in a silver two-door Porsche-style car tried to drag her into the car by the arm.

The woman, who had some martial arts training, managed to land one solid blow to her attacker and escaped his clutches.

The two men in the car, which had no rear number plate, were described as skinheads. One was wearing a black hoodie.

Police were investigating links between this car and reports of a silver two-door Nissan Skyline acting suspiciously near the Alexandra St bars a short time earlier .

The alleged serial rapist police have been hunting in Hamilton since the start of the month was also reported to be driving a silver car, but inquiry head Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Page said it was hard to say last night's incident was connected.

"There are some differences between this case and the attacks we are investigating as part of Operation Phil," Mr Page told NZPA.

"But we can't categorically rule out a connection. We will continue to investigate last night's events but we will also continue to focus on Operation Phil."

The Operation Phil investigation is looking for a rapist believed to have committed attacks on April 1, May 20 and July 1.

On each occasion a woman who had been out socialising in the downtown Hamilton area had accepted a ride from a man described as credible who drove her away and subsequently attacked her.

Mr Page said the inquiry was continuing to progress but the 25-strong team had a lot of work to go through.
